Drone Inspections - Topographic Surveys

Project Overview

IAS has carried out integrated survey campaigns on bridges and viaducts within active road and railway networks, supporting inspection activities and infrastructure asset management processes.

Operations were performed in coordination with traffic management systems, site safety procedures, and ongoing construction activities, ensuring continuity of infrastructure operations while minimizing impacts on mobility and operational environments.

The surveys covered structural and functional elements including spans, piers, decks, bearings, accessible and inaccessible areas, intrados sections, elevated components, and complex zones traditionally characterized by limited accessibility.

The integrated acquisition approach enabled rapid collection of high-accuracy datasets while reducing operator exposure and optimizing inspection workflows.

The generated digital information supports technical inspections, structural condition assessments, maintenance planning, Digital Twin creation, and long-term infrastructure lifecycle management.

The methodology also enables integration with BIM, GIS, and predictive maintenance environments to support future monitoring and engineering decision-making processes.

SURVEY TECHNOLOGIES USED

  • Drone photogrammetric survey
High-resolution aerial acquisitions for geometric reconstruction, orthophoto generation, defect identification, and documentation of inaccessible areas.

  • External Laser Scanner surveys
High-density point cloud acquisition for accurate representation of structural geometries and detailed digital reconstruction.

  • External surveys using Robotic Total Station
Precision topographic measurements supporting geometric control, monitoring activities, and integration of multi-source datasets.

  • External surveys using GNSS (GPS) systems
Georeferencing and establishment of survey control networks to ensure spatial accuracy and interoperability of digital deliverables.
